There was just one gameday in Week 6 as the schools came back from the holiday break. After Thursday's games, there are now only two gamedays left on the regular season schedule (next Tuesday and Wednesday).
South Forsyth's 7th grade team moved to 9-0 after defeating previously unbeaten Hendricks. With the win, the Eagles became the first team to clinch home court and the number one seed in the playoffs. All other seeds in both 7th and 8th grade remain up for grabs as the teams head into the last week of the regular season.
In 7th grade, just behind South Forsyth is Riverwatch at 7-1. The Panthers knocked off Lakeside to take over second place in the standings. The victory locked RMS into a first round bye as well. Riverwatch travels to Hendricks (currently third place) next Tuesday in a matchup that will determine the number two seed. The winner will also get home court advantage in the quarterfinal round.
After the top three that have clinched a first round bye, there are six teams that are within two games of each other for the last two byes. Sitting in fourth place, Vickery Creek could lock up their spot with a win over Lakeside next Tuesday. On the other side of that matchup, Lakeside would move into the fourth spot with a win of their own.
Liberty, Little Mill, North Forsyth, and Piney Grove are all tied for sixth place with matching 3-5 records. The four teams still have an outside shot of getting one of the two first round byes still remaining.
In 8th grade, the playoff picture is clearer, especially in regards to the first round byes. Four of them have already been determined. South Forsyth (1st) and Hendricks (3rd) clinched byes before the break. North Forsyth (2nd) and Lakeside (4th) earned their byes with wins in their games last week.
Piney Grove currently holds the fifth spot in the standings. With a win over Liberty next Tuesday or a loss by Little Mill, the Grizzlies will wrap up the final bye.
Despite some clarity with the first round byes, the seeding is still wide open. South Forsyth, North Forsyth, and Lakeside are still in the running for the number one seed. NFMS controls their own destiny. Two wins next week will get the Wildcats the top seed. One loss by NFMS will open the door for SFMS and LSMS with the chance for a perfect triangle to exist and a coin toss looming.
After six weeks of action, South Forsyth remains atop the 7th grade in scoring margin, winning by an average score of 50.7-26.6 (24.1 margin). Lakeside jumped to the top spot in 8th grade with a scoring margin of 15.1 points per game (46.5-31.4).
South Forsyth is averaging 50.7 points per game, which leads 7th grade. Behind the Eagles are Hendricks (44.7 PPG) and Riverwatch (44.0 PPG). Piney Grove is averaging 50.4 points per game and sits in the first position in scoring for 8th grade. South Forsyth (47.9 PPG) and North Forsyth (47.0) are second and third in scoring average.
On the defensive side of the ball, South Forsyth's 7th grade team now holds a slim lead in OPPG, holding their opponents to 26.6 points per game. Hendricks sits in second place, giving up 27.3 PPG. The Hawks' 8th grade team is giving up 30.7 PPG, which leads the league. Lakeside (31.4 OPPG) is quickly closing the gap and stands in second place for points allowed in 8th grade.
After clinching the #1 seed, South Forsyth will have their bye date. Riverwatch and Hendricks will take center stage in their battle for the #2 seed. After six weeks of action, less than half of the league (5 of 11 teams) have positive scoring differentials. The top three are still averaging double digit margins.
The top five in the standings have separated themselves from the other teams in the league with two gamedays remaining. All five teams have winning records in their home games and road games. Their scoring differentials range between 9.8 and 15.1. DeSana is the only other team with a +PPG.
