The Forsyth County Schools have entered into Christmas and New Year's break. There are just three gamedays remaining until the playoffs begin Tuesday, January 21st. After the teams return from the break, the next games will take place on January 9th.
There were seven games that finished within single digits on Tuesday, which was the most this season. The next highest was on December 5th when six such results occurred.
South Forsyth's 7th grade team remains the only undefeated team in both grades.
In 7th grade, the 8-0 Eagles are leading the league by one game over Hendricks. Those two teams will meet up on their return to action January 9th. That game could determine the number one seed for the upcoming playoffs. Another important game between the current third place team (Riverwatch) and fourth place team (Lakeside) will take place that same day.
The top three teams in the standings have started to put space in between themselves and the rest of the league. South Forsyth, Hendricks, and Riverwatch are within one and a half games of each other. Lakeside and Vickery Creek are tied for fourth place in the standings, three and a half games behind.
In 8th grade, despite being half a game back in the standings, North Forsyth is in the driver's seat for the number one seed in the league. The top three teams all have one loss, and the Wildcats already have wins over the two teams ahead of them (Hendricks and South Forsyth).
Just like in 7th grade, the HMS versus SFMS matchup upon the teams' return from the break will play a big role in seeding for 8th grade. The winner will take sole possession of first place in the standings for the time being.
After five weeks of action, South Forsyth remains atop the 7th grade in scoring margin, winning by an average score of 51.3-25.3 (26.0 margin). Hendricks maintained the top spot in 8th grade with a scoring margin of 14.9 points per game (43.3-28.4).
South Forsyth's scoring average is back over 50.0 points at 51.3, which leads 7th grade. Behind the Eagles are Hendricks (45.6 PPG) and Riverwatch (44.6 PPG). Piney Grove is averaging 51.3 points per game and sits in the first position in scoring for 8th grade. South Forsyth (47.8 PPG) and North Forsyth (45.3) are second and third in scoring average.
On the defensive side of the ball, Hendricks' 7th grade team now holds a slim lead in OPPG, holding their opponents to 25.0 points per game. South Forsyth sits in second place, giving up 25.3 PPG. The Hawks' 8th grade team is giving up just 28.4 PPG, which leads the league. Lakeside (31.6 OPPG) stands in second place for points allowed in 8th grade.
Riverwatch was idle on Tuesday and fell to one and a half games behind South Forsyth. However, the Panthers still sit in a good spot to get a top three position. Those two teams, along with Hendricks, seem to be the class of the league so far. Each of the three teams are averaging double digit PPG victories.
North Forsyth and Piney Grove have played the toughest schedules so far with each already having played the top 4/5 in the league. NFMS is 3-1 in those matchups while PGMS is just 1-3. The one loss for NFMS was to Lakeside, while the one win for PGMS was versus Lakeside. That answer could come in handy on trivia night.
