The Hendricks Hawks defeated the previously unbeaten South Forsyth Eagles, 39-25, in Saturday's 7th Grade Girls' Basketball Championship. It is the school's first tournament title after a number of close calls over the past couple of years. The Hawks finished the 2024-25 season with a 12-1 record.
Just like in 8th grade, the dominance of the two championship contenders throughout the regular season and playoffs was astounding. South Forsyth defeated Hendricks 45-33 on January 9 to earn the top seed. In all other games, the two teams outscored their opponents by more than 31 points a game!
1st Quarter: Both teams came out firing with 12 points a piece in the opening stanza (it would be the highest scoring opening quarter of Championship Saturday). The points were evenly distributed with five players scoring for Hendricks and four players recording points for South Forsyth.
2nd Quarter: The scoring slowed down in the second quarter. Each team scored three baskets. Once again, the scoring was well distributed out amongst three different players for each team. South Forsyth's Brooklyn Scott had one of the buckets and a free throw make. That free throw put the Eagles ahead by one at halftime, 19-18.
At halftime Little Mill was awarded with the Sportsmanship Award as voted on by the league's coaches.
3rd Quarter: Out of the break, Hendricks began to take control the game with their defense. South Forsyth was held to just two free throw makes in the quarter by Piper Schorr. Meanwhile, Hendricks scored nine, led by Evelyn Bancroft's six points. Heading into the final quarter, the Hawks held a six point advantage (27-21).
4th Quarter: Another dominant quarter by Hendricks sealed the Hawks' championship. Twelve points by Hendricks matched their first quarter output. South Forsyth could not follow suit, as the Eagles put up four points on two baskets by Molly Tereshinski. Hendricks' Hunter Goss was the star of the show, finishing the quarter with eight points. Her two 3 pointers were the only shots made outside the arc over the course of the entire game.
