The Liberty Patriots won their fourth overall 8th Grade Girls' Basketball Championship on Saturday after defeating the previously undefeated Lakeside Lions, 54-50. It is Liberty's first title since the 2019-20 season. The Patriots avenged their only loss of the regular season and finished their 2024-25 campaign with a 12-1 record.
To understand the dominance of the two championship contenders, outside of their matchup during the regular season (Lakeside won 47-38), both teams' next closest games were 19 point victories. That happened only once for both teams. All of their other victories were by 30 points or more!
When the dust settled and the championship game was set, there was a buzz throughout the county about this game. Even the casual basketball fan wanted to be in the gymnasium at East Forsyth HS Saturday evening to see this matchup. All those that did show up were not disappointed as the energy and intensity were extremely high throughout.
1st Quarter: Both teams started off strong on the defensive side of the ball. Lakeside led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter. Lakeside's Brielle Macbeth led all scorers in the quarter with five points.
2nd Quarter: The second quarter was just the opposite of the first with an offensive explosion by both teams. Liberty won the quarter 23-16 to take a 30-25 lead into the halftime break. The Patriots spread the wealth as three players (Emma Bourque, Camryn Cappelli, and Camille Osmon) scored six points a piece. Lakeside's Carib Morris (14 points) scored all but two of her teams points in the quarter.
In addition to their dominance on the court, at halftime Liberty was also awarded with the Sportsmanship Award as voted on by the league's coaches.
3rd Quarter: Both teams struggled to score again coming out of halftime. The Patriots and Lions fought to a stalemate (9-9) and Liberty maintained their five point lead (39-34) going into the final period. Once again, Lakeside's Brielle Macbeth was the high scorer with six points.
4th Quarter: Just like the second quarter, the offenses picked up the pace in the final stanza. Liberty could not pull away, but Lakeside could not forge ahead. It was a one possession game for most of the quarter as the game drew close to the finish. After a few empty trips for both teams, the Patriots were finally able seal the victory with clutch free throw makes by Camille Osmon.
