There was just one gameday in Week 6 as the schools came back from the holiday break. After Thursday's games, there are now only two gamedays left on the regular season schedule (next Tuesday and Wednesday).
Heading into next week's games there are two undefeated teams remaining in girls basketball (South Forsyth in 7th grade and Lakeside in 8th grade). There are four teams just behind the league leaders with just one loss (Hendricks at 8-1 and Lakeside at 7-1 in 7th grade; Liberty and Piney Grove both at 7-1 in 8th grade).
In 7th grade, South Forsyth is out to a 9-0 start after knocking off second place Hendricks last week. The win moved the Eagles one step closer to earning the number one seed in the tournament, but third place Lakeside is still on the schedule. If SFMS wins their matchup on Wednesday, they will get the #1 spot. LSMS needs to win Tuesday (vs Vickery Creek) and Wednesday (vs SFMS) to have a shot at the top seed. In addition, if LSMS does get two wins to get to 9-1, HMS will have a chance at the top seed, as well if they pick up a win against Riverwatch Tuesday. That would create a perfect triangle at the top, and the top three seeds would be determined by a coin flip.
Liberty sits in fourth place and needs one victory to clinch a first round bye. The Patriots are in a battle with Vickery Creek (5th), DeSana (tied for 6th), Little Mill (T-6th), and Riverwatch (T-6th) for one of the top five positions going into the season ending tournament.
In 8th grade, three teams clinched first round byes with their victories in Week 6. Those teams are Lakeside (1st), Liberty (T-2nd), and Piney Grove (T-2nd). Lakeside needs one win to earn the top seed in the tournament. The two chasers need LSMS to slip up twice to get to the top. Tuesday's matchup of Liberty at Piney Grove will knock one of them out of the running and could be the deciding game for who gets the number two seed and home court advantage in the quarterfinals.
Fourth place, South Forsyth, needs a win in their last game or a loss by North Forsyth or Riverwatch to get a first round bye. Currently, NFMS and RMS are tied for 5th, but RMS holds the tiebreaker with their head-to-head victory in Week 4.
After six weeks of action, South Forsyth leads the 7th grade in scoring margin, winning by an average score of 50.3-17.2 (33.1 margin). Lakeside still sits atop the league in 8th grade with a scoring margin of 35.9 points per game (56.9-21.0).
South Forsyth maintained their spot leading 7th grade in scoring at 50.3 points per game. Hendricks (45.4 PPG) is second and the only other team above 32.0 PPG. Lakeside is averaging 56.9 points per game and sits in the first position in scoring for 8th grade. The next closest team in PPG is Liberty at 46.5. The Lions and Patriots are dominating their competition.
On the defensive side of the ball in 7th grade, three teams are allowing less than 20.0 points per game. It is no surprise that it is the top three teams in the league (SFMS-17.2, LSMS-18.9, and HMS-19.4). In 8th grade, Liberty (17.8 OPPG) and Lakeside (21.0) are at the top of the league in points allowed per game.
Hendricks, South Forsyth, and Lakeside have the top three spots locked up. LSMS has won seven in a row after dropping their opening game to HMS. SFMS handed HMS their only loss. SFMS is off Tuesday but then plays LSMS Wednesday in what could end up deciding the top seed in the playoffs, possibly by a coin flip.
Just like 7th grade, the top three seeds have been locked up by Lakeside, Liberty, and Piney Grove. LSMS holds the tiebreaker over LMS and PGMS with their regular season victories over their closest pursuers. LMS and PGMS face off Tuesday, which could determine who gets home court in the playoffs.
