The Forsyth County Schools have entered into Christmas and New Year's break. There are just three gamedays remaining until the playoffs begin Tuesday, January 21st. After the teams return from the break, the next games will take place on January 9th.
Three unbeaten teams remain in girls basketball. Hendricks and South Forsyth are both 8-0 in 7th grade, and Lakeside is off to a 7-0 in 8th grade. There are also three teams with just one loss. Those are Lakeside at 6-1 in 7th grade, and Liberty and Piney Grove both at 6-1 in 8th grade.
In 7th grade, Hendricks and South Forsyth won big and are leading the league by one and a half games over Lakeside, who also won their Week 5 game. The league leaders will meet up on their return to action January 9th. The winner will take sole possession of first place with one game remaining for each team (HMS & SFMS have their bye dates over the last two weeks of the season).
The top three teams in the standings have started to put space in between themselves and the rest of the league. Hendricks, South Forsyth, and Lakeside are within one and a half games of each other. Liberty, Riverwatch, and Vickery Creek are trying to stay in the top five, which would give them a spot in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
In 8th grade, last year's champion in 7th grade has emerged as this year's favorite. Lakeside stands alone atop the standings after defeating Piney Grove in a battle of unbeatens last week. That means Lakeside now owns the tiebreaker (if one should present itself) over the two teams tied for second place (Liberty and Piney Grove) based on their head-to-head wins over both squads.
After five weeks of action, South Forsyth leads the 7th grade in scoring margin, currently winning by an average score of 51.0-15.3 (35.8 margin). Lakeside still sits atop the league in 8th grade with a scoring margin of 36.7 points per game (57.1-20.4).
South Forsyth maintained their spot leading 7th grade in scoring at 51.0 points per game. Behind the Eagles, Hendricks (47.0 PPG) closed the gap by a few points after another big win. Lakeside is averaging 57.1 points per game and sits in the first position in scoring for 8th grade. The Lions are dominating their competition. The next closest team in PPG is Liberty at 45.9. Piney Grove is third in points scored per game at 40.0.
On the defensive side of the ball in 7th grade, three teams are allowing less than 20.0 points per game. It is no surprise that it is the top three teams in the league (SFMS-15.3, HMS-16.3, and LSMS-18.0). In 8th grade, Liberty (17.7 OPPG) and Lakeside (20.4) are at the top of the league in points allowed per game.
Hendricks, South Forsyth, and Lakeside appear to have the top three spots locked up. South Forsyth plays Hendricks and Lakeside after the return from the break. Those matchups will go a long way in determining the seeding for the playoffs. The top three are the only teams with a positive scoring margin.
Now holding the tiebreaker over the other two teams directly behind them, Lakeside essentially has a two game lead in the standings. Liberty and Piney Grove still have to face each other after the break, which could determine who gets home court in the playoffs through the semifinal round.
