This year's championship game will be a rematch of last year's championship game and this year's season opener as both #1 seeds, Lakeside (East) and North Forsyth (West), punched their tickets to next Tuesday's final. Before getting into the games, congratulations are in order for both Little Mill and South Forsyth.
Little Mill jumped out to their best start in program history by winning their first four games of the season in staggering fashion. The Mustangs outscored their first four opponents by an average of 35-2! Yes, they only gave up an average of 2 points per game! That's quite a feat at any age.
In their fifth game, Little Mill faced off with North Forsyth for first place in the division. The Mustangs came up short, but their hopes of making the playoffs were still alive.
Then came a bit of a shocker as Little Mill dropped a triple overtime heartbreaker to DeSana. Despite it not being a divisional game, the team seemed to be in a tail spin after losing two games in a row.
The Mustangs got a reprieve as Fall Break fell the following week and they had their bye week after that. So making the playoffs came down to defeating Liberty in Week 8. Hopes were dimmed with the two game losing streak, but Little Mill's defense was back on point as they shut out the Patriots to make their very first playoffs in school history!
After making the playoffs last year, South Forsyth bolted out of the gates, running wild with a big win in Week 1.
The Eagles second game of the season was against last year's champion, Lakeside. Lakeside already had a big win under their belt and the Lions came out strong. However, South Forsyth put together a big comeback in the second half. Although it fell just short, the Eagles showed that they had serious playoff potential.
South Forsyth then rattled off five wins in a row, outscoring their opponents by an average score of 36-5! Another unbelievable scoring differential. The Eagles' performances after dropping their game to Lakeside were so dominant that the team had already locked up their playoff spot in Week 5!
Lakeside kept their unbeaten streak going with a 46-20 win over Little Mill in the semifinal round of the playoffs. The main storyline in this game was Lakeside's powerful offense versus Little Mill's stingy defense.
Although the final score does not show it, Little Mill's defense was winning the battle through the first quarter. However, Lakeside kept the Mustangs off the board, as well, with the score knotted 0-0. Lakeside scored a pair of touchdowns and two point conversions in the second period to lead 16-0 and never looked back from there.
Little Mill reached the endzone twice in the third quarter, but so did Lakeside. The Lions led by three scores going into the final frame, 32-14. The fourth quarter saw Lakeside once again put up two touchdowns, while Little Mill was limited to one score. The final score: Lakeside 46, Little Mill 20.
What's next: Lakeside will continue their quest for a repeat in the championship game next Tuesday vs North Forsyth.
Meanwhile, Little Mill saw their impressive season come to an end just one game from the championship.
North Forsyth defeated South Forsyth after a thrilling second half comeback. The focus of this game was on South's potent ground game and North's prolific passing attack.
South Forsyth jumped on the board first, running for a touchdown to lead 8-0. South's defense scored the next touchdown with a scoop and score off of a fumble. The second quarter was much the same as the first, with South adding another rushing score and also holding the Wildcats scoreless. South led 24-0 at the half.
There was a stalemate between the two squads to start the third quarter before North Forsyth got into the endzone midway through the period. North's defense made the correct adjustments and the passing game started to click. The Wildcats put up another touchdown drive to end the quarter and they were within one score, 24-16.
Not too deep into the fourth quarter, North Forsyth once again found the endzone with a long pass play and with the converted two point conversion, the score was tied with eight minutes left in regulation. For the next seven and a half minutes, the two teams would battle back and forth, trading turnovers and possessions. Then, with 26 seconds left on the clock, North would complete their amazing comeback with another touchdown and a 30-24 victory!
What's next: North Forsyth gets a much anticipated rematch with Lakeside in the championship game next Tuesday.
South Forsyth dominated the first half of the game, but saw their chance at another shot versus Lakeside come up just short.
