2025-26 Girls Basketball
Week 2 Review
Week 2 of the girls’ schedule wrapped up Thursday, and a midweek adjustment created a three-day slate of action. With Vickery Creek and North Forsyth shifting their games to Wednesday night, teams played across three separate evenings. Of the 20 games contested, 16 resulted in splits between the competing schools. DeSana was the lone exception, finishing on the losing end of all four contests, though its 8th-grade squad came just eight points shy of completing a perfect 20-for-20 slate. Piney Grove had its bye date Tuesday, while Otwell was off Thursday.
On Tuesday night, the Lakeside–Hendricks matchup delivered a pair of tightly contested games. The visiting Lions claimed the 7th-grade contest in overtime, while the home-standing Hawks responded by taking the 8th-grade game. The 7th-grade overtime thriller marked the first extra-period game of the season. Lakeside surged to a 17-point lead before Hendricks mounted a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback, outscoring the Lions 19–2 to force a tie at the end of regulation. The Hawks, however, ran out of steam in overtime, allowing Lakeside to secure the win.
While the 8th-grade game did not require overtime, it was equally competitive down the stretch. Hendricks broke the game open with a strong third quarter, building an eight-point advantage after holding just a one-point lead at halftime. Lakeside trimmed the margin in the final period, but the rally fell short, preventing the Lions from completing a two-game sweep.
The excitement from Tuesday night fizzled somewhat on Thursday, as only two games were decided by single digits. Once again, Hendricks’ 8th-grade team found itself in a tight battle, this time on the road at DeSana. The defending champions held just a one-point lead at halftime, then increased that advantage to two points heading into the final stanza. Hendricks was able to double the margin in the closing minutes and hold on for a four-point victory.
The other single-digit margin came in the Piney Grove at Riverwatch matchup, where the Grizzlies secured a nine-point victory. In the low-scoring contest, Piney Grove held a slim two-point lead at halftime and then created separation in the third quarter, stretching the margin to seven points. The Grizzlies’ defensive pressure carried into the final period, as they added two more points to the lead to close out the win.
Little Mill and Riverwatch have been dominant at the 7th-grade level, each opening the season 3–0 with average winning margins of more than 20 points. In 8th grade, three teams remain undefeated, with South Forsyth standing out as the most impressive so far behind a +28.0 average margin of victory. Hendricks and North Forsyth are the other two teams sitting at 3–0 through Week 2.
