The same two teams that battled it out for last year’s County Championship once again found themselves neck-and-neck, tied heading into the final hole of this season’s County Invitational. And just like the year before, Lakeside (+36) delivered when it mattered most, doing just enough down the stretch to edge Riverwatch (+38) by two strokes in another tightly contested finish.
After falling behind by seven shots through the opening four holes — their largest deficit of the day — the Lions showed resilience. Lakeside settled in and played their final five holes at a steady 14-over par, while the Panthers could not maintain their early momentum, finishing their last five holes at 23-over. Hole by hole, Lakeside chipped away at the lead until the two sides were deadlocked once again heading into the closing stretch.
With the shotgun start format spreading groups across the course, both teams had their top two golfers finish on the ninth hole. In a fitting moment, all four players carded bogeys, keeping the match even and setting up a dramatic finish. The tournament ultimately came down to each team’s final two golfers. Lakeside’s closing golfers managed a crucial par on the first hole and limited damage with a double bogey on the fifth, while Riverwatch posted a bogey on the first and a triple bogey on the fourth, opening the door for Lakeside to secure the narrow victory.
Vickery Creek (+51) claimed third place in the 11-team field. The Vipers endured a slow start through four holes but rebounded impressively, turning in one of the stronger finishes of the day. Hendricks (+60) and North Forsyth (+60) rounded out the top five at Olde Atlanta Golf Club in Suwanee.
Overall, it was a strong showing across the field, as seven teams matched or improved upon their finishes from last year’s County Invitational — a sign of growing depth and competition across the county.
